A Message From The President – September 29, 2023

Congratulations to Madison Simms of Natchitoches for earning the distinguished title of the 66th Annual Miss Northwestern – Lady of the Bracelet. Madison, a junior majoring in biology, will proudly represent Northwestern State in this year’s Miss Louisiana Competition, and will be awarded scholarships and prizes totaling over $8,000.

Today, the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) welcomed 120 students from the surrounding region to NSU STEM Day. This event provided vital insights into the promising career avenues within STEM fields for potential students. They had the privilege of engaging with accomplished faculty and like-minded peers, gaining perspectives into our diverse range of degree programs at NSU.

Tonight, I have the honor of hosting nearly 100 high-achieving high school students and their families at my residence for the N-Side View President’s Reception. I look forward to learning about their career aspirations and personal goals during our conversations.

This Saturday, NSU will open its doors to almost 1000 visitors for N-Side View Day. This event offers an exclusive peek into college life, where parents and students will explore student organizations, meet academic departments, apply for admission, and receive valuable advice from our faculty and current students. N-Side View Day stands as NSU’s premier recruitment weekend. Let’s all put our best foot forward and exemplify the potential that NSU holds for these students and their families. Our aim is to facilitate a seamless transition from secondary to postsecondary education, all while empowering students to realize their fullest potential at NSU.

After N-Side View Day, we will host thousands on our campus for Family Day tailgating before the football game against Southern Illinois at 6 pm. Please join us at the official NSU Alumni Association Tailgating Party tomorrow at 3 pm at the Collins Family Pavilion. For members of the NSU Alumni Association, the cost is $10.00, while non-member pricing is $15.00. This fee covers one buffet pass and two beverages. To become a member and enjoy exclusive pricing for these events, please visit the NSU Alumni Association.

Additionally, on Saturday at 4:30 pm, we will formally inaugurate the NSU Fieldhouse as the Donald G. Kelly Athletic Complex, in honor of Donald G. Kelly, former Louisiana State Senator. State Senator Donald G. Kelly garnered acclaim as one of the state’s most influential legislators, having served nearly two decades in the Senate. Senator Kelly spearheaded the efforts to secure substantial funding for numerous programs and projects, greatly benefiting Northwestern State University and the broader Louisiana region.

Following the Donald G. Kelly Athletic Complex Naming Ceremony, the Demons will compete against the Eastern Illinois Panthers at 6:00 pm in Turpin Stadium. I anticipate seeing you all there, radiating energy, excitement, and pride.

It’s a great time to be a Demon. I’m excited for the future – for our future. The pace and scope of positive change in all things has accelerated. Major breakthroughs, some of which will be pioneered by our own NSU students, are reshaping the world for the better at a remarkable pace. I’m thankful to be a part of this extraordinary institution.
