The University was notified this week by Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), that the Board of Trustees found Northwestern State University compliant and “no further action is required” to complete the fifth-year cycle for the 2018-2023 Fifth-Year Interim Referral Report. This is great news! Thanks to the University community for your efforts and for adopting a culture of accountability. Please know you are making a difference; your work is appreciated as the University continues to pursue excellence.
Once again, I have the pleasure of sharing how proud I am of the Department of New Media, Journalism & Communication, and the work they do with our students. NSU’s Hispanic Student Journalist Association (HSJA), with support from NSU-TV News Service, successfully secured $23,100 through the Student Technology Fee Grant. This funding will elevate the award-winning podcast, “Latino Living,” ensuring the continued production of professional-grade interviews. This accomplishment also extends benefits to all majors within the Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts.
“Latino Living” explores life, family, and relationships from the perspective of NSU’s Spanish-speaking students. Members of the Latino Living crew are: Naydu Daza Maya, Lia Portillo Cantarero, Isabel Juarez-Rubio, Allison Florez Bermudez, and Laura Cabracas Vargas.
I want to acknowledge Dr. Nick Taylor and Amber Miley for their efforts of crafting a cohesive grant application. I also express my gratitude for the ongoing support that has elevated HSJA and NSU-TV News Service to prominent positions within the New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts department.
Please be on the look out for Coach Mike McConathy’s legacy to be immortalized at Northwestern State University, as the basketball court is set to be named “Mike McConathy Court at Prather Coliseum,” tentatively scheduled for Fall 2024. By dedicating the floor to Coach Mike, we aim to honor and preserve the legacy of Louisiana’s all-time winningest college basketball coach, ensuring that his remarkable accomplishments are remembered and celebrated.
McConathy, who retired two years ago with an impressive 682 total wins, including 330 at NSU, left an indelible mark with three NCAA Tournament appearances in his 23 seasons at Northwestern State.
Finally, I commend the NSU Foundation under the direction of Dr. Drake Owens for their efforts in achieving a remarkable milestone in 2023, securing over $7.2 million in donations. This marks the third consecutive year of increased private support.
I personally thank the Office of Development for their dedication and hard work. Their efforts have played a pivotal role in this success, fostering a culture of generosity that strengthens our university.
Dr. Marcus D. Jones
